A film archive is a list of films, put into a specific order.

If you visit this website, http://www.screenonline.org.uk, go to the film link then films by decade it gives you a detailed list of all the films that have been made and aired over a very long period of time (in years) You are able to click on the films and get an in depth description of the film itself, so you have an idea of what the film is. Also on some films you are able to see clips, but not all. These can be helpful is you wanted to find an old film that could not be bought, as you could search for the archive.
